Garden Museum Journal | Sowing Roots
Product description
Sowing Roots: Caribbean Garden Heritage in South London, is part of the Garden Museum’s Sowing Roots project, a first of its kind journey into the history of the gardening cultures and traditions that Caribbean people carried with them when they moved to the UK after World War II.
This multi-year, intergenerational project followed the garden journeys of horticulturalists who came to the UK and settled in South London as part of the Windrush generation, their voices recorded in interviews by young people aged 15-21 years old to form a part of the journal, alongside artefacts, artwork and photographs.
Exploring horticultural knowledge and traditions of the Windrush generation, and how this shaped their experiences of migration and community building in the UK, the journal unearths how their stories enrich our understanding of the power and joy of gardening.
