Gnomes were believed to ward off evil and to help plants grow during the night. This is why gnomes are often depicted with the equipment of rural life such as spades, forks, wheelbarrows and trugs.

The Fishing Gnome is terracotta, dressed traditionally in a red pointed hat and armed 'mit angelrute.' He dates to c. 1900 and is the oldest gnome in the Museum's collection. The fishing gnome is the rarest figure in a rare set of eight gnomes who fish, shoot and play golf in a 'Fairyland' Alpine setting. He was created by Heissner, one of the best-known names in garden gnomes.

The gnome in the bottom corner is a lead gnome with a mortar base made by Britains, a British toy company that specialised in metal models, circa 1935.

The gnome with a spade was created around 1960 though its creator is unknown.
